APPRENTICESHIP
Ironworkers Local 444 is committed to keeping pace with today's growing
needs in education and training.  The construction industry demands a
workforce that is ready and willing to expand it's programs to train
workers in the latest technologies.
TERM OF APPRENTICESHIP

Local 444 currently operates a 3 year apprentice program.  The term of apprenticeship shall be no
less than 6,000 hours of on-the-job training.  In addition to on-the-job training, a minimum of 204 hours
of related classroom studies shall be completed each year.  At the completion of the Apprentice
Program, each apprentice must appear before the Examining Board of Local 444 to take a written and
practical test.  Upon passing this examination, the Apprentice shall qualify as Journeyman Iron Worker.


STUDIES AND REQUIREMENTS OF CLASSES

Students must maintain a passing grade average.  Welding certification is mandatory for completion of
the apprentice training.  No student will move on to journeyman until an AWS D.1.1-96,  D1.5-95 weld
certification has been completed.

Evening classes run from September through May.  (6:00 PM  to 9:00PM two nights a week)

Course studies include:
structural steel
concrete reinforcement
rigging        
ornamental
welding
job planning and procedures
math
hazard awareness and safe work procedures
metal buildings
post tensioning
OSHA 10
blueprint reading
labor history and union principles

QUALIFICATION OF APPRENTICESHIP

Applicants shall not be less than 18 years of age.  Each applicant is required to present an original
birth certificate.

Applicants are required to provide a high school diploma, or GED certificate at time of application.   
Original documents will be copied by the Apprenticeship Office for file and returned to applicant

At time of selection, and prior to orientation, apprentices will be required to pass a drug screening.  
Random drug screening will be carried out throughout the term of apprenticeship.

Applicants must show proof of residency in the Local 444 jurisdiction to apply.



APPRENTICE SELECTION PROCEDURES

Applications will be accepted at The Ironworkers Apprenticeship office, at pre-designated hours.  
Announcement concerning the opportunity to apply for the Ironworkers apprenticeship will be made
available through published newspapers periodically.


WAGES

Apprentice wages are based on a percentage of the current journeyman wage
rate.
